NH family dairy farmers

The Bohanan farm in Contoocook, N.H., has been in Si Robertson’s family for more than 100 years. Almost from the start, the Thompson School has played a critical role in the farm’s development. Robertson notes that his father, grandfathers, a great-grandfather and great uncle were all Thompson School alums. This fall, Si’s brother Nate will become a first-year student.

Robertson began his studies with a great desire to continue the farm’s legacy for his family and community. What he learned reinforced his belief that he was on the right career path: “The people I’ve worked with—both professors and students—have supported my aspirations and inspired me.”

In the IAG program, Robertson maintained his focus on dairy management, critical to the farm’s Contoocook Creamery, while delving into diversification options. “I learned about soil management and growing small fruits, and that’s been very helpful,” says Robertson. “But just as important are the learning skills.”
