February 14th is just around the corner and whether you’re Cupid’s biggest fan or a Valentine’s Day Scrooge, there is some way for you to enjoy the day in and around campus. There are possibilities for dates to “woo” a special somebody, relax with friends, or find a hideout that will be completely barren of hearts and flowers.
If you’re looking forward to spending time with your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day there are plenty of options. The classic romantic dinner is a great go-to, especially if you go into nearby Portsmouth (Wildcat Transit is a viable way to get there if you don’t have a car on campus!) Library Restauarant is a cozy yet elegant steak house with the perfect Valentine’s vibe — you are going to want to make reservations as soon as possible. If you’re looking for a date that’s more casual and well-equipped for the college student budget, a day trip to stop in a coffee shop like Kaffee Vonsolln and stroll around town is picturesque. Remember to dress warmly if you want to be bitten by the love bug rather than frost. Also, throughout the week leading up to Valentine’s day, be sure to stop by the MUB to support the clubs and organizations selling Valentine’s grams and goodies! Or, of course, your local flower store, Red Carpet Flower Shop, is a great place to buy a sweet bouquet.
Just Okay with Cupid
If you don’t have anything major going on this February but don’t want to spend the whole weekend swiping through Tinder, there is a happy medium for singles. Gather a group of friends and go out to a romantic lunch or dinner in the dining hall. If you don’t feel like being around any of the happy couples who will inevitably be strolling around, try out a fun new recipe at home (even if it’s just heart-shaped sugar cookies- a totally legitimate meal.) If you don’t get your mid-February sugar fix at Chocolate Fest in the Memorial Union Building on the 11th then you will have to make a stop at the Durham Market Place or Rite Aid on Sunday for post-Valentine’s priced candy.
Do you find your mood plummeting every time you see a sappy card or overpriced box of chocolate? Are you pretty sure you’re allergic to the feathers on Cupid’s wings? No need to lock yourself in your room until March — there are plenty of unromantic activities going on. On Saturday night, MUB Movies is showing “St. Vincent” and award-winning “Birdman” in the Memorial Union Building. Both movies have received high praise and are mostly, if not entirely, romance-free!
