Students Try To Stay Stress Free

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that I’ll be graduating this year or if I really do have more work than I’ve had in the past, but for some reason I have been feeling way more stressed out than usual. Stress is something that affects everyone to some degree, but fortunately for us, UNH offers lots of ways to reduce it.

A great resource at UNH when dealing with stress is Health Services. They offer many group programs, such as yoga, meditation, and Reiki Circles, all of which are intended to relieve stress for students. Their website also offers many informative and helpful articles and lists with tips on how to reduce stress.

If you’re looking for something a little more private and individual though, the UNH Counseling Center is another great place to go. Students are able to talk one-on-one with licensed psychologists and therapists and it’s completely free of charge. Often just talking about what’s causing your stress can help to relieve it, whether it’s with a professional or just one of your closest friends.

Another way to reduce stress, although it may not be everyone’s favorite, is to go to the gym. Working out at the Hamel Rec Center, or just going for a run, can really help to clear your mind and get you refocused on the things you have to do. Working out also makes you feel better and frees you of the some of the negativity that you may have. It also serves as a nice break if you’re in the middle of a lot of studying.

Something that I have to do if I’m feeling stressed out is to just step back and take a minute to look at all of the things that I actually have to do. I tend to think that things are a much bigger deal than they actually are and I can get easily overwhelmed. When I make a list though and organize everything I have to do in order of due date and importance, it becomes a lot more manageable.

Another key to keeping stress levels low is getting plenty of sleep. People always say that we need at least eight hours a night, but who really does that? It actually is important though and feeling fully rested helps make people feel calmer and more focused. It’s easier and less stressful to tackle a big pile of homework if you’re not half asleep and irritable the whole time.

One of the main things I’ve found that helps if I’m feeling overly stressed out is to just stop and take some time to myself. For me this means flipping through a magazine or reading a book that I’ve been neglecting. For you it could be catching up on your favorite TV show, playing a video game, or sitting outside your favorite coffee place and just doing some simple people watching. As I said earlier though, UNH offers plenty of ways to reduce stress. Maybe you could take some time to yourself by lying out on T-Hall lawn and taking in the beauty of campus as we make the transition into fall. What do you do to reduce stress?
