Alumni Tale: Tony Berry ’01

What did you study at UNH?

Communication and Philosophy

What were you doing 1 year out of college?

I was on a backpacking adventure to Australia via Europe. I figured when else would I be able to live like a nomad and travel the world with limited responsibilities? I recommend this to anyone and now that I’ve been in the working world for almost 15 years, I still look back on this time as one of the best of my life!

What were you doing 5 years out of college?

I was working in the Admissions Office at UNH, working with amazing people and leading the student tour guide program. I highly recommend admissions as a career, and not one I think many people think of. I really miss that world, and it set me up for a great career with many transferable skills.

What were you doing 10 years out of college?

After working two seasons for Burton Snowboards, I landed my first full-time, year-round job with Burton. Heading up customer service for North America was a dream come true and was a perfect blend of my former life in higher education and my new Burton experience.

What are you doing now?

Livin’ the dream! HR was a natural progression and I love supporting marketing, creative, finance, legal and sustainability here at world HQ in Burlington, Vt. We have an amazing company culture and I’m honored to be a part of that.

How do you feel your time at UNH has had an impact on where you are today?

UNH is where I came alive academically and socially. From Day One at Freshman Camp, I learned to be an active participant in my educational journey. I wanted to study things I was personally interested in and passionate about; not worrying too much about what kind of job I would get after college. I recommend that approach to anyone; do what you love and the rest will fall into place eventually. It’s not always a carefree approach and there have been some rough patches, but I’m fortunate to now be in a place where I can be my authentic self at work and be surrounded by similarly minded people.
