The Best College Pet

A lot of dorms you first visit when you start school will feel much more like school than a home. Their rooms are cold, they don’t really have any decorations, there are no posters or pictures on the walls, and there’s usually no carpet. However, the rooms I have been to that feel the most like a home are the ones that have Christmas lights and rugs laid out, posters up and pictures to decorate. But the one thing I’ve found to be in all my favorite dorm rooms have been a betta fish. Perhaps it’s the idea that there’s literally a living pet in your room rather than a pet rock or dust bunny, but either way they really add personality to a room.

Betta fish have been a part of my life growing up like most other kids; they’re colorful and graceful, they are super low maintenance, they have personalities, and they proven to lower stress levels when you watch them swim around. So basically the best pet for college. If you’ve never had a betta fish, the first thing is that they’re cheap. All you need is a decent sized bowl, some aquarium decorations, and the fish itself and that’ll add up to maybe $20. And as we all know, college students don’t have the most money so cheap is good. The only downside to owning these fish is that their water needs to be changed at the most, bi-weekly, and they need to be fed daily. The solution is that if you live close to home and come home maybe twice a month, use those opportunities to bring the fish home to clean them or you can attempt to change the water in the bathrooms. Also, you’ll need to set alarms to remind yourself to not starve your fish.  Lastly, betta fish are tropical fish so if you like sleeping in a freezing room; you’ll need a small aquarium heater so you don’t freeze your fish.

The Best College Pet

Whether or not you’re a fish person, owning your own betta fish is great way to make your new dorm feel more like home. Yes, you can have your own pet, and though I’ve listed off a few cons, they have much more pros. They’re cheap, low maintenance, they won’t bark, and they won’t smell. Betta fish are virtually the best college pet, and also the best way to make being away from home, feel more like home.
