On the evening of October 28 Sigma Tau Delta, UNH’s international English honors society, hosted their first “Scream Slam” at the Freedom Cafe. Teaming up with UNH’s Mask and Dagger Dramatic Society, students recited either original or previously published works. Brooke Snow ’16, recited a scene from “Macbeth,” Heather Bies ’15, reciting Wadsworth and “Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner,” Shannon Murphy, ’18, reading an original work called “They Have to Play Fair,” James Rochefort ’17, reading “The Raven,” and Kathryn Violette ’15 reading an original called “Morning Run.” The contestants were judged by the audience based on a five point system each reader was awarded a prize in the end.
Member of Sigma Tau
Being a new member of Sigma Tau, it was exciting to see the group in action. You could see how spirited the contestants were, not just for the chance to win one of the gift baskets, but for the chance to express themselves creatively. This also being my first venture into the Freedom Cafe, I was impressed with the laid back and cozy atmosphere – the smell of coffee grounds, the glow of the dimmed lights and the sound of poetry; ideal for a relaxing evening. Students trickled in and out from 6 to 9 p.m. time frame, enjoying the free pizza and drinks and of course the readings. If you didn’t have the chance to attend, look for Sigma Tau’s next event – the slam was a “screaming” success (haha) and was a wonderful beginning for this year’s upcoming events.
Special thanks to Village Pizza and The Freedom Cafe for providing pizza and drinks, respectively, for the evening
