Alumni Tale: Raya Al Hashmi ’13

What did you study at UNH?

Journalism

What were you doing 1 year out of college?

Post graduation I was an intern with Seacoast Media Group as a photojournalist for 3 months. After the internship, I went to Oman to visit my family for about 3 months before returning to New Hampshire. I lived in Dover while working at a gym and started a photojournalistic project, People of Portsmouth. This was the foundation of building my business that I started in February 2016.

What were you doing 5 years out of college?

I am about 5 years out of college now and truly living what it is that fuels me. I own a business brand photography company in Portsmouth, NH. My company, Raya on Assignment, has served hundreds of businesses from entrepreneurs to international corporations.

What were you doing 10 years out of college?

I haven’t gotten there yet and I know it’s going to be amazing.

What are you doing now?

Back to the answer above, I am truly experiencing what it means to do what you love for work. It’s incredible.

Did you have an international experience (study, research, internship or volunteer abroad) while at UNH?

Self-development was the biggest takeaway from my time at UNH. Through the organizations I was in, the opportunities I experienced, and the people who supported me, I was able to better step into my truth.

Why do you believe in UNH?

Sometimes we need people, places, experiences, opportunities, and a community that believes in us before we can see the brilliance that we all have and are. UNH was this for me.
