Alumni Tale: Matthew Barry ’05

What did you study at UNH?

History and Political Science

What were you doing 1 year out of college?

My passion: Teaching & Coaching. In December of my senior year, I was offered a job to teach 8th grade American History and to coach cross country, basketball, and track & field back home in Atlanta, GA. (I competed at UNH in Track & Field in the pole vault from 2001-2005)

What were you doing 5 years out of college?

I was still employed teaching and coaching in Atlanta, Ga.

What were you doing 10 years out of college?

I was celebrating my first ten years of teaching and coaching at The Davis Academy in Atlanta, Ga.

What are you doing now?

Currently, I am in my 11th year at the Davis Academy where I teach 8th grade American History. In my 11 years at Davis, I have coached dozens of conference & state champions in cross country and track & field, chaperoned trips with my students to New York City, Washington DC, Jamestown, and Israel. I have been published in a number of educational journals and books, spoken at Georgia state and national conferences in education, and I am still loving my job!

How do you feel your time at UNH has had an impact on where you are today?

The lessons I learned while a student-athlete at UNH, as a member of the UNH Track & Field team, taught me life skills that are accolades to my personal success. If not for my coaches, advisors, and professors, I would not have been able to achieve my goal of becoming an educator and coach.

Why do you believe in UNH?

I believe in UNH because UNH believed in me both as a student and an athlete, and I am now a happy and successful teacher & coach! Proud to be Wildcat!!! #IBelieveInUNH
