Hillel Chanukah Party

Hillel Chanukah Party

On Tuesday, December 4, UNH Hillel hosted its annual Chanukah party in the Memorial Union Building Strafford Room for all students to attend free of charge. The room was all decorated with Chanukah colors and decorations. There was a large display of Jewish foods including a variety of bagels, doughnuts, and my personal Chanukah favorites—gelt (chocolate coins) and latkes (potato pancakes)! Various games were played throughout the evening like dreidel, life-sized Jenga, and Chanukah Bingo, distributing local restaurant gift cards as prizes. Although Chanukah doesn’t begin until the night of Saturday, December 8th, it was a great way to kick off the holiday before the stress of finals week! This experience was especially great for me because for the first time ever, I will not be home to celebrate most of Chanukah with my family due to the finals schedule, which will definitely be a change I’ll have to adjust to in the future…

One thing has been made clear through my experience at UNH thus far regarding the student body: a lack of diversity. What’s so great about this school is that there are so many clubs and programs designed to help students come together by recognizing similarities and encouraging others to broaden their horizons. Personally, I knew I wanted to be a member of UNH Hillel before moving in this past August. I grew up in a community with very few Jewish families in my town, and I knew that trend would continue when I came to UNH. Joining Hillel was a great decision for me and I’m planning on being a UNH Hillel member until I graduate because I enjoy it so much! The meetings are every Tuesday night for only an hour and the club is open for Jewish and non-Jewish students. The weekly meetings revolved around upcoming Jewish events like the high holidays earlier this fall, and different multicultural activities. This club even allowed me to reconnect with another freshman at UNH that I went to Hebrew school with back in elementary school!
