Alumni Tale: Gordon Smith ’08

What did you study at UNH?

Business Administration

Did you have an international experience (study, research, internship or volunteer abroad) while at UNH?

I studied abroad in Budapest, Hungary during fall 2006 as part of a Business program.

What were you doing 1 year out of college?

I graduated from UNH in May 2008 — not an ideal time as the markets were about to go south.  I worked for Sabre Yachts/Back Cove Yachts for a few months before a layoff hit.  I was out of work for a few months, but luckily at home… which then led to an opportunity to move to Denver  (June 2009) to work for a very small oil & gas company.

What were you doing 5 years out of college?

I was still living in Denver, but had joined the Colorado Rapids (MLS team) where I worked in varying capacities for 5 years.

What are you doing now?

I recently left the Colorado Rapids and made a change to an entirely new industry- IT staffing and recruiting, where I am a Technical Recruiter for The Judge Group.

How do you feel your time at UNH has had an impact on where you are today?

The college experience was great and was always challenged in and out of class.  Socially, the UNH experience even helped me with my adjustment and move to Denver.  I thought I would be in Denver for a year or two, but am pushing 7 years here now and don’t see going home despite how much as I miss New England- the ocean especially.

Why do you believe in UNH?

The friends, faculty, and staff I met, the sense of community, the beautiful campus, the experiences, the courses, the successes and challenges all contributed to an amazing 4 years and maybe the most important and memorable 4 years of my life.
