I was delighted to have the opportunity for a behind the scenes tour of the UNH hockey team and Whittemore Center on Friday, March 1st during a home game against UMass Amherst. I saw both the men’s and women’s locker room and learned about the superstition that stepping on the wildcat logo on the carpet in the locker rooms is bad luck. The equipment room is loaded with multiple backup hockey sticks, pucks, gear, and a giant laundry machine and dryer! Walking down the long hallway, I saw a wall of fame for the UNH hockey players who furthered their career into the NHL. Of course along the way I was greeted by Wild E. Cat and Gnarlz, the famous boy and girl wildcat mascots who glide across the ice rink at the start of every home hockey game. My favorite part of the tour was having the ability to sit on top of a zamboni—a top item on my college bucket list!
The UNH hockey team is treated like royalty and they deserve it since they’re currently number four in the nation! They have their own private gym and press conference room, their laundry is done for them by the equipment managers after every practice or game, and their traveling bags for away games are also packed for them! I love watching hockey games and participating in the student section chants, but this behind the scenes tour of the hockey teams was a great opportunity and I learned a lot. I even got to keep an official UNH hockey puck as a souvenir!
