A New Semester for RAs

A New Semester for RAs

After a fun first semester of being a Christensen Hall RA, I was more than ready to go back to school on January 16th for a brief RA training. Since we had already covered policies and how to handle various situations over the summer for the fall semester, this training was focused on second semester goals, some workshops, and a lot of floor preparation before the residents came back. The staff worked together to create a list of our second semester goals based on what worked and what did not work last semester. Workshops were led by UNH Hall Directors and RAs—first was a career-themed workshop to highlight the Residential Life focus for the start of the semester. From there, we were all able to choose two workshops to attend which were really useful. I went to one about the debate over whether or not to reapply to be an RA taught by Paul Chiarantona (Hubbard Hall Director) and another about balancing everything with meditation techniques taught by Michelle Blanchette (Jessie Doe Hall Director).

A New Semester for RAsTraining consists of various fun activities as well. My staff did a few enrichment games during our in-hall time and had a movie night and taco night in our Hall Director’s apartment. We also attended 80s dodgeball at the Whittemore Center where a few of the Hall Directors were making pancakes. Amidst all this was hours of floor preparation including fliers, bulletin boards, and door decs. I’m looking forward to a great second semester as an RA because I learned a lot about the job first semester and I love watching my residents and staff members grow as their college experiences continue.
