Beyond Pipe and Pond Engineer Training (BPP)

The BPP training was the product of a collaborative effort between UNHSC, the Cooperative Institute for Coastal Estuarine and Environmental Technology (CICEET) and the NOAA Coastal Service Center (CSC).   This training module targets the critical gap in science-based information in designing state-of-the art treatment practices for Stormwater Management. BPP is a one-day workshop featuring science based, technical information and research results related to the design and performance of stormwater treatment systems. It has been developed for engineers and other professionals involved in the development or review of stormwater treatment designs, such as individuals from private consulting firms, public works departments, and planning boards.

The training goal is to improve participant’s ability to choose the stormwater treatment system or combination of systems that can achieve water quality targets in compliance with current and impending regulations, while at the same time effectively matching peak flows and reducing runoff volume.

Participants in this training will: be taught to understand the latest stormwater treatment system performance data from the UNHSC; be able to use this information to overcome technical barriers to effective design; use understanding of system performance to address both water quality and quantity related issues; critique existing stormwater site designs for their ability to maximize performance; and improve the overall approach at managing stormwater as well as articulating the importance of stormwater management itself.

* Note for Florida area BPP events please refer to details provided on the registration form and receipt.

Where are the workshops?

The workshops will be held at the Hugh Gregg Coastal Conservation Center located at 89 Depot Road, Greenland, NH 03840. Directions to the HGCCC can be found >> here

Overview of Course

8:30-9:10

Introduction and Course Overview
Review the agenda for the day and get to know your fellow participants.

9:10-9:30

University of New Hampshire Stormwater Center (UNHSC)
Understand why the UNHSC was created, how it evaluates stormwater treatment system performance, and how the range of data it generates is relevant to your work.

9:30 - 10:15

Effectively Targeting Pollutants – UOP’s
Learn how unit operations and processes (UOPs) work in stormwater treatment systems to target pollutants of concern.

10:15 - 10:30

Break

10:30 -12:00

BMP Performance Data
Learn about UNHSC performance data and how it can be combined with an understanding of UOPs to generate effective stormwater management strategies that can meet stormwater regulatory targets at federal, state and local levels.

12:00-1:00

Lunch

1:00-1:30

Local Case Study – BMP’s at work in your community
Hear from a local professional about how effective stormwater management designs have been implemented in your area– topics to include design, performance, barriers, cost, maintenance and lessons learned with an opportunity for Q&A.

1:30- 4:15

w/15min break

Applying Research Findings to Critique Professional SW Designs
Apply the data and concepts learned earlier in the day to critique real site designs using references and professional materials. During this interactive session, participants will share findings and discuss the strengths and limitations of such designs in their local context.

4:15-4:30

Review, Wrap up and Course evaluation
