Brian Mehr came to UNH in the fall of 2001 after 2 years of coaching at UMass-Amherst and his alma-mater of URI. He started rowing at URI, graduating with a degree in Engineering in 1999. After graduation, he was the varsity men's coach at the University of Rhode Island. The next year, he took the position of Freshman Men's Coach at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The 1st and 2nd Freshman Heavyweight 8+’s won the 2001 New England Championships and finished fourth and third respectively at the Avaya Collegiate National Championship (now ECAC). During those two summers, Brian coached Junior Women and Learn-to-Row programs at Narragansett Boat Club (NBC) in Providence, RI.
From UMass and NBC, he moved to UNH in 2001 taking the position of Interim Varsity Men's Coach. He coached the varsity men to a 5th place finish at the New England Championships. From 2002 - 2007, Brian was the Freshman Men's Coach. Brian’s crews reached the finals of the New England Rowing Championships every year, earning 2 Bronze and 1 Silver.
While rowing at URI, Brian was a member of the Varsity Heavyweight 8, which made the finals of the New England Championships and went on to win Silver at the ‘98 Dad Vail. His senior year, he stroked the Varsity Heavyweight 4 which reached the finals of the ‘99 Dad Vail. Brian served as team treasurer and team President. Also during his senior year, he earned the award for Most Valuable Oarsman. Brian completed his Master’s of Business Administration under the Whittemore School of Business and Administration. While in graduate school full-time, he served as the Graduate Assistant to the Sport Club program. In addition to coaching, he also works at UNH in the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
