History
As a major research university, UNH is committed to continually strengthening and supporting international studies and undergraduate research opportunities. In 1987, this commitment gave rise to the UNH Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), which has funded and administered grants and fellowships to support more than 1500 UNH students in their pursuit of research, scholarly, and creative projects.
In 1998, to further develop opportunities for students, the International Research Opportunities Program (IROP) was established with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education. The program was created to provide funds and administrative support for UNH undergraduates to conduct research in a foreign country during the summer of the junior year. through the program, undergraduates have traveled to Costa Rica, France, Spain, Brazil, Hong Kong, Norway, Australia, England, Finland, Thailand, Tanzania, Honduras, Ecuador, Russia, Canada, Ukraine, and many other destinations across the globe.
The success of UROP and IROP combined with the growing demand of students looking for research opportunities, and the willingness of benefactors to support undergraduate research at home and abroad, brought forward the Center for Undergraduate Research.
Today, the center houses the programs of UROP, IROP, and Inquiry, the UNH Journal of Undergraduate Research.
