COLA 401 - Undeclared Liberal Arts Advising Seminar

Course Description

This course is an introduction to the nature of academic knowledge, academic standards, and academic management skills essential for success in the University. This course is the foundation of the Undeclared Liberal Arts Advising program. This course is focused on exploring majors, academic success, and building a 4 Year Plan.

Course Structure

This course meets once per week for 50 minutes. Each session is led by a professional advisor from the University Advising and Career Center. Students are responsible for attending and participating in all meetings and other activities as assigned throughout the course.


This is a 1-credit, credit/fail course. Grades for this class will be based on attendance, participation, and satisfactory completion of all assignments.

Course Content

Each week, students will explore new topics relating to being a first-year student. Through each topic, students will build and add to their 4 Year Plan, culminating in a final presentation of this plan.

Weekly Topics (tentative)

  1. Academic success and getting started at UNH
  2. Getting involved, time management, academic success
  3. Career exploration and career resources
  4. Exploring majors related to career interests
  5. Identifying and researching majors, courses, requirements, and one-on-one meeting
  6. Course selection and your academic plan
  7. Finalizing course selection and meeting with advisor and one-on-one meeting
  8. Expand multicultural competencies and conduct informational interviews
  9. Course registration, staying on track, preparing for finals
  10. Final meeting, preparing for spring semester, and presenting your 4 year plan
