Writer/Editor Intern, Applaud Women Magazine, Summer 2012

What would you tell your peers they need to do to find a great internship?

Definitely network, as much and as often as you can.  Most of the opportunities I’ve found so far have come by making contacts and sustaining the relationship. Telling others what you’re striving for, whether it’s a friend, roommate or coworker, can only help you. You never know who may be the friend of someone in your chosen field.

What did you learn from your internship search that you will apply in future job searches?

The biggest thing I learned is the importance of finding a balance in the application process. While it’s good to seek multiple opportunities, you need to make sure you don’t have application overload.  Being able to know your potential employer, what they do and what you want to accomplish if given the position will benefit you during the interview stage.

What skills are you using and/or learning at your internship that you can use in entry-level jobs?

Being in the writing field, everything I’m doing at Applaud Women will help me in an entry-level journalism job. I’m interviewing, writing, editing and interacting with all types of people giving me a good look into future journalism positions.

What is one highlight from your internship experience?

Being able to work on a well-rounded group of projects has been the highlight for me. Through my internship I’ve been able to research and write feature pieces for the health, beauty and food sections as well as interviewing local business women and editing other articles for publication.

What is the most valuable part of your internship experience?

Working closely with my editor has been wonderful; I’ve enjoyed learning that new dynamic. We’ve brainstormed ideas, reviewed edits and discussed interview techniques. It’s really been an invaluable experience.
