Show

“How the Hippopotome Earned His Grace” is a 45 minute production with lessons in individuality, community and self esteem. Using music, movement, puppetry and story drama, the show is about a young hippo who seems to be clumsier and more awkward than the other animals. It is only when the village elder encourages him to seek out a place where he truly belongs that the young hippo discovers his true grace. African drumming, music, culture and dance accompany this animal filled production.

Curriculum

ArtsReach touring theatre enhances education and culture in New England communities and supports the US Department of Education’s mandate for arts education as a core subject within all schools. This production meets curriculum frameworks in diversity, geography, language arts, music, dance drama and visual art. ArtsReach extends the Arts in Education benefit by adding puppets and drama to also cover frameworks in visual arts and theatre. A study guide with curriculum frameworks will be available.

Audience

The show can be performed at schools, children’s hospitals, and churches. The show is appropriate for grades K-6 audiences. The arrangement of your space, the type of seating, and whether or not you have a stage or platform will be factors in determining the best size audience. In order for the audience to have the most enjoyable experience and good sight lines, the recommended audience size is 20 to 200 people (or possibly up to 300). For larger audiences, you may consider two options: 1) Have two performances with a 15 minute break between (this option is available to those whose schedules meet our time requirements). 2) Limit the performance to particular grades/ages (example: grades K-3 instead of K-6).

Dates & Times

The tour is available February 10 through May 10, 2010 for morning performances on Wednesdays and Fridays. Bookings will be accepted from locations that are within a 2 hour drive to Durham. The morning performance time is determined based on the travel distance. Time is needed for: 1 hour load-in and preparation; 45 minute production; 30 minute strike and load-out. The production will include the performance and a post show discussion. Post-show will offer a Q&A about the show and puppets, and will demonstrate how to build a puppet.

Space

The performance space should be at least 16’ wide x 12’ deep x 8’ tall (all on one level). A stage or platform is not required, but is preferred if available at the correct dimensions. 1 standard electrical outlet for the sound system will be needed. General lighting is sufficient. The space should be free and clear 1 full hour prior to the performance time and be available a total of 2.5 hours. The preferred audience seating should be arranged theatre style.

Remuneration

ArtsReach tours are nonprofit and are funded solely by the hosting organizations. For one show, we request a donation commitment of $400. For a second show, please provide an additional $200. A deposit of $100 per show or a purchase order for the full amount is requested within 10 days of receiving a UNH Performance Agreement. The balance is requested within 10 days after the performance. Checks are payable to UNH.
