| Auditions will be held in conjunction with the Mask & Dagger auditions. General call for both plays will be Tuesday, Feb 2 starting at 6pm. CALLBACKS will be on the following evening, Wednesday. February 3. What should I Prepare? First- make sure you read the play. It is important you know the nature of this project. Then, choose one of the monologues provided and fully prepare it. You will present this monologue like any other you have prepared for an audition. You must also be prepared to READ any of the other monologues that are listed. I will likely have every person read one additional monologue. What will happen in call-backs? I will be calling back some individuals to read in scenes chosen from the play. There will likely be two to three groups that I will have come in for about one-hour each. The scenes will be posted on the THDA website audition page for Trojan Barbie What if I am interested in auditioning for both Trojan Barbie and Mask & Dagger's production? Go for it. Andy and I will be discussing the casting together. If you are being considered for roles in both productions you will be offered what we feel is the best role for you. Please download the audition form and have it filled out before your audition. ALWAYS ARRIVE IN PLENTY OF TIME BEFORE YOUR AUDITION SLOT! Production Rehearsals: Rehearsals will begin the Monday after spring break (March 22). We will rehearse 6:30-10:30pm M-F, and on Sundays. We will not rehearse Friday April 2 (Good Friday) or Saturday April 3, but we WILL rehearse Sunday evening, April 3 (Easter). An additional rehearsal may be added on Saturday, April 10 from 6-10pm. At this time a rehearsal is scheduled for March 29 (first night of Passover). That rehearsal may be canceled. TECH WEEK REHEARSALS: Tech week rehearsals: 12-5pm Sat and Sun April 17 and 18. Dress Rehearsals: 5pm-11pm Mon, Tues April 19, 20. PERFORMANCE DATES: WED April 21 @ 7pm THURS April 22: 12:40pm AND 7pm FRI April 23: 7pm SAT April 24: 7pm SUN April 25: 7pm ABOUT THE PLAY Trojan Barbie is a complex, funny, dark, poetic, brutal, and all together fascinating play. It is a play that will challenge both actors and the audience. It is not an “easy” play for actors or audience. The play has layers upon layers of symbolism and meaning, just like the layers and layers of earth that cover a strata of civilizations from the streets of modern Turkey to the ruined walls that guarded ancient Troy. Here are some answers to questions that may come up as you read the play: Does the play take place in the past or the present? The answer is…yes. That is to say, the play operates with the two “uneasily folded into each other” as the playwright states. Think of it like an earthquake that has opened the earth in such a way that the past and the present are exposed to each other. So the play is ALWAYS in the present AND the past. What’s up with the dolls? The thematic use of dolls is best summed up in Lotti’s speech when she explains why she can not allow children into the Doll Hospital. She says that the children think the dolls are real. It is like when we see carnage on the TV. Those images are so removed from us, that they appear in many ways to us as not real. To those swept up in the destruction, it is horrifically real. Will you be changing any of the language? No. We will perform the play as written, though I may add two to four choral women. Many people will find some of language and imagery used in the play (particularly by Cassandra) to be crude and shocking…and it is. The playwright wrote these lines for specific reasons and we will honor the characters she has created. What if I am offended by the language? Some people (audiences as well) will indeed be offended by the language of this play. However, the language is part of the sharp and brutal poetry of Trojan Barbie. It all has a purpose and reason for being there. That being said, I certainly do not fault anyone for not appreciating the style or content of this play. If this is the case for you, it makes sense to pass on this audition. Can I expect any changes in the play?: At this point I may not double up the roles as suggested by the playwright, and, as I said, I may add two to four “Chorus” roles. Outside of that- there are no major changes planned. |
