(Advice from Current Students)

During the last week of their Freshmen year, we asked some students who were taking a break from studying for finals to start packing up all their “stuff” and to answer a few questions.

How did you decide what to bring with you to UNH?

What are you glad you brought?

Any advice for new students?

Here are some tips from students about what to bring to campus and how to survive the first few weeks.

Write or e-mail your new roommates when you get the roommate assignments.

Bring a stapler! "My roommate the most popular person on the floor because of her stapler". Most people don’t realize how important the little stuff is – like duct tape, hammers, clocks, etc…

We don’t really ever use a microwave, and if we need to we can use one from someone down the hall.

I bought bins for under my bed. It is important to maximize the storage space.

It is important to plan for colder weather. It was really hot when I packed my stuff and I didn’t bring enough warm stuff.

I think a printer is an essential item. It can get really expensive printing stuff off at the computer center.

It is nice to have fish in your room. I recommend waiting until you get here to buy them.

It is really important to bring something to remind you of home. I’ve had the same alarm clock since 7th grade.!

Bring something to sit on, like a comfy chair or a couch.

You definitely need a rug. You can buy that when you get here.

Downsize! Don’t bring too much stuff! You can always borrow stuff from other people in the hall.

I have a bucket of candy as a doorstop. It helps to start a conversation since people usually walk in after grabbing a lollipop.

Bring a full length mirror.

Keep your door open. People will walk by and say hi!
