Mediation Services

Conflict is a normal part of life - dealing with it effectively makes all the difference.

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process in which a neutral third party helps participants find solutions to conflicts. There is no right or wrong, no winner or loser in this process. Mediation is about problem solving. All participants are given an equal opportunity to explain their sides of the story. The mediators then assist the participants in outlining an agreement to resolve their issue. Mediation is used by many different members of the UNH community including: roommates, friends/dating relationships, organization members, or neighbors. By using the mediation process in good faith, the opportunity to resolve your dispute with another person can result in mutually satisfying outcomes for everyone. If you want more information regarding the mediation process, including how to serve as a volunteer in the program, or to schedule a mediation, please call 862-3377 or visit the following website www.unh.edu/mediation

How Does the Mediation Process Work?

a. All participants in the dispute agree to mediation.
b. On a mutually satisfying date and time, the participants meet together in a conference room with two trained mediators.
c. The co-mediators will establish ground rules and an "Agreement to Mediate" form is signed by the participants.
d. Each participant will have an opportunity to present his or her side of the dispute in a safe, relaxed, confidential, and structured environment.
e. The mediators then help the participants define issues and common interests.
f. Once the stories have been told, honestly and completely, and common interests and concerns have been defined, the mediators and participants generate possible options toward a solution.
g. Once these options are developed, the next step is to evaluate and determine practical solutions.
h. Once an understanding is reached, a realistic written agreement is developed to which all participants consent to and sign.
