SPAC Survey and Voting Results

by Martin England

In December 2005, the Supported Products Advisory Committee (SPAC) voted to approve and, in some cases, retire various software and hardware products. Through various communications, SPAC encouraged the UNH community to complete a supported products survey. Feedback from the survey was used to help decide which software and hardware products would be supported by UNH, and which would be retired. The survey is still available on SPAC’s website at http://www.unh.edu/cis/supported-products, and the accumulated results from the survey will be used in next year’s SPAC vote.

If a product is on the UNH Supported Products List, faculty, staff, and students can get assistance. For defined levels of support, please refer to the SPAC web site. If a product is not on the list, those who need assistance will receive one hour of free consultation as resources allow. After the initial hour of service, the client may be charged if additional work is required to solve the problem.

SPAC Survey Results
The SPAC survey was posted in various locations, including the Computing @UNH module on Blackboard, the SPAC website, and also on the CIS Help Desk & Dispatch Center website. We received 490 completed surveys, the majority completed by UNH faculty and staff (78%), and the remaining shared equally by residential and off-campus students (approximately 11% each). While we will not post the entire results of the survey in this space, here are a few samples of the information that was gathered:

• Nearly equal amounts of UNH students/faculty/staff use desktops and laptops

• Internet Explorer is the most popular Internet browser

• 42% of those surveyed use McAfee VirusScan

• Windows XP Pro is the most commonly used operating system

• 61% of those surveyed access the UNH Wireless Network

• Outlook was the most popular e-mail program

• 62% of those surveyed knew what it meant when a computer product is supported

• 61% of those surveyed use/own a mobile device equipped with a wireless card

• 77% of those surveyed revealed they did not know who represented their department or area on the SPAC Committee.

The SPAC December vote produced the following changes: For more information, including a complete list of SPAC Representatives, please visit SPAC’s Website at http://www.unh.edu/cis/supported-products.
