E911 Update
Telecom Staff
April, 2009
In July 2008, CIS Telecommunications and Client Services updated Telecom Account Managers
(TAMs) and Business Service Center contacts regarding preparation for bringing all UNH
telephone services into compliance with the State of New Hampshire E911 statute. Telecom
continues to work with individual TAMs to identify how each department’s services will be
affected by this change.
E911 (short for Enhanced 911) is a “North American telecommunications based system that
automatically associates a physical address with the calling party’s telephone number, and routes
the call to the most appropriate Public Safety Answering Point for that address. This provides
emergency responders with the location of the emergency without the person calling for help
having to provide it” (Source: wikipedia.org).
Departments can either have new extensions assigned for telephone numbers that appear in more
than one location or simply have the additional locations disconnected. If neither of these options
is suitable, Telecom staff will work with your department to achieve a viable alternative.
These changes will be implemented at no cost to the department. Any new monthly recurring
charge(s) for phone service associated with replacement extension(s) will bill at $0.00 for the
remainder of FY09. Effective July 1, 2009 (FY10), the replacement extensions will sustain the
regular monthly rate.
Telecom is working towards completing this transition by the end of June, 2009 (FY09). We
appreciate your patience as we work together through the process of complying with the State of
New Hampshire Enhanced 911 regulations.
