By Nikky Homstad<br />
<br />
In the summer of 2007, the CIS Help Desk added Bomgar, a secure tool that allows Help Desk Consultants to remotely view a client’s desktop, making it easier for us to assist clients efficiently. With the client’s permission, the consultant can gain remote access to the client’s machine, providing us with a first-hand view of the issue. The remote support session must be proactively started by the client; the Help Desk does not have the ability to randomly access computers on the UNH Network. <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2008/bomgar.html">more</a>

Don't Be the Weakest Link<br />
by Petr Brym<br />
<br />
Using a computer to access services over the Internet or on a local network is a bit like driving a car. It usually goes well, but if we do not take certain precautions things can go wrong in a hurry.

Safe driving is much like safe computing. To use a computer safely and productively, whether for work or fun, many things must be true. The computer, including the network and services accessed, must be properly configured and updated frequently to mitigate new and existing dangers that threaten one’s privacy. <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2008/dont-be-the-weakest-link.html">more</a>

You have heard it all before. Choose a strong password, dont write it down where others can see it, change your password periodically, make sure no one is watching when you type your password, dont respond to E-mails that request your password, and dont give your password to anyone, ever. Its a bit like someone saying to you 'be careful out there' as you head out on a trip in your car. <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/april2008/be-careful.html">more</a>

While the items listed below are debatable in terms of order, they are all essential to protecting your computer from malicious attacks, and also protecting your identity (and if your job includes it, the identities of others). <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2007/top20-cyber-tips.html">more</a>

The majority of computers purchased today are laptops, which means better mobility - and with wireless networking, we now have the ability to pick up our computer and move to the basement, attic, or the bedroom. Keep in mind that while wireless networks are not secure, it is possible to make it at least a little more difficult for unwelcomed users to access. <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2007/safe-wifi.html">more</a>

Finding and using a wireless connection has become second nature to most laptop users. Few would argue the benefit and convenience of checking E-mail or browsing the Internet while sipping a latte at your favorite coffee hut. But that convenience could pose a serious security threat making a computer and all its data available to hackers. <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2007/safe-surfing.html">more</a>

My father used to tell stories of the wild early days of the automobile, how he and his friends would race across the roads around Kansas City. No doubt the exploits grew over years of telling, but one comment was as certain as "once upon a time" in a childrens tale: "Of course you couldnt do that today. Its just too crowded." <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2007/vantagepoint.html?id=7f364fcc-ffe7-ec53-5ac1ab5a900435f0">more</a>

As a longtime fan of the former NBC situation comedy Cheers, I often long for the face recognition that the character Norm received every time he entered Cheers. In todays fixed and mobile computing world, to be as well-recognized as Norm may not be such a good thing, especially if personal data is unknowingly being readily broadcast by your trusty computer. <a href="http://www.unh.edu/signals/october2007/tipsforall.html">more</a>

Welcome to Signals Blackboard Made Safer with SSL

Welcome to Signals Blackboard Made Safer with SSL
Renee Cicerchi

Beginning Sunday, March 11th, all Blackboard functionality will be safer, thanks to Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. Prior to this date, secure connections have been available for all email, logon and Webcat functions. After March 11th, all information exchanged between the Blackboard website and users browsers will be encrypted, adding an additional layer of security onto an already stable environment.

This change will be seamless, save for Blackboards URL, which will now be prefaced by HTTPS instead of HTTP. Users will also now receive messages stating This page contains both secure and non-secure items. Do you want to display the non-secure items? This happens simply because some of the images used Blackboard modules created by content contributors are located on a non-SSL server (referred to as mixed content).

To stop these messages from displaying, simply change Internet Explorers setting to allow mixed content. Heres how:

Open Internet Explorer and choose Tools, then Internet Options.
Select the Security tab, and then Custom Level.
In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll to the Display Mixed Content setting in the Miscellaneous section and choose Enable.
Choose OK in the Security Settings dialog box, and then OK again to exit Internet Options.

Note: After allowing mixed content, web pages with both HTTPS and non-HTTPS content will appear, but the Internet Explorer lock icon will not be displayed.

Having Trouble Opening Microsoft Office 2007 Documents?

Having Trouble Opening Microsoft Office 2007 Documents?
By Jason Boucher and Martin England

Microsoft has just released Office 2007, and it arrives with a new file-naming system which may cause problems for pre-2007 users. Fortunately, a remedy exists.

Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files are now formatted using eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The good news is that files saved in the new XML format are half the size of previous Microsoft Office versions, saving valuable hard drive space.

Microsoft Office 2007 files are distinguishable from previous versions by their file extensions. Instead of saving a Microsoft Office Word, Excel, or PowerPoint as .doc, xls or .ppt respectively, files will be saved as .docx, .xlsx and .pptx.

A free Compatibility Pack is currently available for download for all who do not have Microsoft Office 2007 installed. The Compatibility Pack allows clients to access all versions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint (1997-2007). Note: Layout and ability to edit certain features will change when a transition is made between different versions of Microsoft Office.

To download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, visit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.
Then choose Most Popular Downloads and select the link for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

                Banner Student Production Links Blocked?
By Cathy Annese

Many Banner Student users have been experiencing difficulty accessing links on the front pages of Banner Student Production. This is most likely due to the recent installation of one of the following programs onto your computer: Firefox, Google, Yahoo, Viewpoint, AIM. These programs are often set to load automatically and often block the ability to view Banner links.

Use the following steps to resolve this issue:

Turn off the Pop-Up blocker located within Internet Explorer, if applicable (Tools>Pop-Up Blocker>Turn off Pop-up Blocker).
Remove any of the following programs: Google or Yahoo toolbar or Viewpoint.
Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight and remove the program. Restart your browser.
Also-please remember that Banner is only supported using Internet Explorer version 6.

Windows Vista & Office 2007 Info

Windows Vista & Office 2007 Information
By Donna McNamara

Windows computers that are sold now may come installed with the new Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. Some of the applications that you currently use may not be compatible with Vista. The Microsoft OEM license for Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate have down-grade rights to an earlier version of the operating system, Windows XP Professional.

If you are planning to purchase a computer that comes with Vista through the UNH Computer Store, the Computer Service Center (CSC) can install Windows XP Professional as part of the PDNC process if you choose to down-grade. UNH clients who use Enterprise Computing applications (such as those listed below) should not upgrade to Vista until these applications are supported by the vendors and CIS tested. CIS will keep these clients apprised of progress. Later, when you decide to upgrade to Vista, the CSC can help you with this installation for a small fee. If you purchase your computer from another vendor please contact the CIS Help Desk, 862-4242, to make arrangements with the CSC for this service.

Microsoft released Vista before many application vendors were able to develop Vista-compatible versions of their computer programs. Please check with your vendor to make sure your program is compatible with Microsoft Vista prior to installation.

A list of Enterprise Computing applications currently NOT supported for IE7 or Vista is included below. The status of applications on this list will be updated as these applications become compliant and CIS completes testing:

 Banner Student Information System
 Banner Finance
 Banner HR
 Business Objects WebIntelligence
 FAMIS
 InfoEd
 Kronos
 Xtender
 Exlibris

Microsoft also released Office 2007 and it is available to purchase. This new version of Office uses a new file format called Office XML. You can open files created in earlier versions of Office and save them with the new file format. However, if you run Office 2007 and are sharing files with others you need to be aware of compatibility issues. If you share documents with others who are not using Office 2007, you will need to save your files in the binary file format of the earlier versions of Office by choosing the Save As command and select Other File Formats. Or, the recipient (who is not using Office 2007) of a document created in Office 2007 will be able to open the new format by downloading the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats from Microsofts website.

Microsoft currently does not have a file converter for Macintosh clients. A Macintosh converter is due to be released in Spring of 2007. Until then if you are sharing files with someone please ask other users to save their documents as Word/Excel/PowerPoint 97-2003 document.
