Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2008

 

 

 

 

Awareness Coffeehouse
Tuesday, April 1, 2008

The goal of this event is to bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault through poetry and music. The coffee house will host a variety of performers, as well as an open mic for anyone who wants to sing, play music, or share spoken word. Free coffee compliments the homemade baked goods that students are selling to raise money for the SHARPP Emergency Student Fund. For more information call SHARPP 862-3494.

 

Bystander Intervention Brown Bag

This interactive program examines the pro-active, positive ways that bystanders can help prevent sexual & interpersonal violence. A combination of visuals, facts and open discussion make this an empowering and informative event that encourages all community members to get involved in preventing sexual violence. Mythbusters Workshop

The goal of this event is to educate the community on the realities of sexual assault. Four different interactive sections featuring information about perpetrators, male victims, alcohol & drugs, and UNH resources & statistics will challenge our thinking about sexual assault and provide information in an entertaining and interactive manner. Movie: Dream Worlds 3 with facilitated discussion by Delia Konzett and Ellen Semran

Peer Education Event: Transforming a Rape Culture

What do sexist jokes, pornography and popular lyrics have in common? They all contribute towards a rape culture, or a social environment where sexual violence is encouraged and supported. Men Stop Rape with Gordon Braxton

Gordon Braxton, a Prevention Specialist in the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response at Harvard University , is an acknowledged young activist in the causes against sexual assault and oppression. He will discuss how men play a role in violence against women and ways they can stop violence against women. At this event, we will distribute White Ribbons in honor of the International White Ribbon Campaign. Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. For more information call SHARPP 862-3494.

 

Speak Out

SHARPP's annual speak out is a time to recognize the enormous impact sexual assault plays in the lives of our community members. Survivors and allies are invited to share their personal stories in a supportive environment that honors their feelings and celebrates their strength. Clothesline Project and Crane Project
Monday & Tuesday, April 28 & 29, 2008
8:00am-4:30pm,  Tent-T-Hall Lawn

 The Clothesline Project is a visual display of the impact that sexual assault and relationship abuse has on the UNH community. This interactive event invites survivors and allies to make t-shirts that illustrate the issues of domestic and/or sexual violence on a very personal level, with each shirt representing a survivor's story. A gallery of current and previous year's shirts will be displayed in the tent.

The Crane Project is a new initiative from SHARPP to promote awareness and healing for sexual assault survivors. Traditionally a Japanese symbol of peace, these cranes will represent hope and healing. Members of the university are invited participate in the Crane project by making cranes at all SHARPP Sexual Assault Awareness Month events. At the end of the month, the cranes will be publicly displayed. For more information call SHARPP 862-3494.
