Getting Help at UNH

SHARPP services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL!

SHARPP is available to UNH students, faculty and staff!

If you have experienced a recent or past sexual assault, relationship abuse, sexual harassment or stalking, you may be feeling overwhelmed and confused about what to do and where to go for help. SHARPP is available 24/7 to listen without judgment and to offer information, options, resources and emotional support. We also provide assistance to individuals who may be assisting a friend/loved through a difficult time.

Contacting SHARPP

Anyone in the UNH community can get help at SHARPP by visiting us during our office hours (Monday - Friday), calling our 24/7 Helpline (603) 862- SAFE or using our Ask an Advocate online service.

Many of our clients are already connected to resources on campus, such as the UNH Counseling Center and Health Services. These service providers may advise and encourage you to seek assistance at SHARPP, and may even accompany you here. In addition, when you make a police report or seek medical attention after an assault, the responders (police, ambulance, etc.) should be offering our services to you.  It is your choice whether or not to use the services SHARPP offers.

About SHARPP Services

Crisis Intervention

Advocates from the SHARPP office can help you work through your crisis and regain a sense of equilibrium for that moment.  The advocate’s goals in crisis intervention are to assist you in sorting through options, feelings, thoughts, and reactions, strengthening coping responses, regaining control, and renewing previously healthy relationships.

Emotional Support

SHARPP advocates can serve as the nonjudgmental sounding board you may need to process your emotional responses to what has happened. As advocates, we are here to listen to your situation, validate your emotions, and empower you to take care of yourself.

Medical Accompaniment

Typically, an advocate will accompany a survivor who is a victim of sexual assault to the hospital for medical care after the assault (specifically for a rape kit).

Legal Accompaniment

An advocate can be made available to assist survivors in navigation of the legal process, whether that is criminal, civil or the University’s conduct system.

Advocacy

Advocates are trained staff and volunteers of SHARPP who meet with survivors to provide a wide-range of services.  Advocates empower survivors by providing information, tools, resources and opportunities.

Academic Intervention

Surviving a traumatic event can take a toll on all aspects of our lives.  If you find you are having trouble keeping up with your coursework, studying for tests or completing assignments on time, SHARPP may be able to provide you with an academic intervention.

Support Groups

Sharing your healing process with others who are also healing from similar situations can be very therapeutic. Support groups offer a safe space in which survivors can talk about their experiences with other survivors.

Resources and Referrals

While every survivor’s story is different, there are many resources throughout the UNH and seacoast community that can aid in your healing process. Advocates can help connect you to the resources you need, but may not already be aware of.

Supporting a Friend

We offer monthly online chat sessions for all members of the UNH community who are concerned about someone they love who is currently experiencing or has experienced sexual violence, relationship violence and/or stalking.  These chats are a great way to get support and information on how to help your friend.

Debriefing Consultations

We can come to your facility (i.e. class, residence hall, department, etc.) to provide a debriefing process in a format that allows all individuals an opportunity to discuss their feelings and reactions to a traumatic event or difficult situtation.

Services for the GLBTQ Community

We are a Safe Zone for the GLBTQ community.

You do not need to be in crisis to call SHARPP. We can assist you if you are wondering about something in your relationship, unsure how to support a friend, or just want to talk. Never feel that an issue is too big or too small for SHARPP to handle. We are here to listen and provide you support, in whatever way we can.
