First Few Weeks of School
Possible transition issues your son or daughter may face in the first few weeks of school

Homesickness

This can seem random in terms of who it hits, but can be consuming and difficult for students to manage.

Time Management

The freedom at college can be an adjustment for some. Learning how to manage these freedoms and balance time appropriately takes some work.

Feeling Unconnected

Going from a place of comfort and connection to having to start over can feel strange in the beginning. It can be a considerable adjustment for some students.

Risk-taking Behavior

Being in a new place and trying out new behaviors can be a great thing, but in some cases it can lead to poor decision-making that could have serious consequences.

Roommate Conflicts

Living with one or more people in close quarters can be challenging for many students.

While many students sail through first semester thrilled with their lives at UNH, it's likely that many of them will also experience some of the transition issues mentioned above. This is a time for them to learn new ways of coping and how to seek out support and help when they need it. You can play a big role in this by listening to them as they describe their experiences and by helping them see their options and find ways to approach the situation.

If your son or daughter is unable to sleep, unable to concentrate, not eating well, or sleeping too much, these are reasons to be concerned. We strongly recommend you encourage them to talk with someone or let us know so we can try to gently intervene.

If your son or daughter is starting UNH with a pre-existing medical or mental health concern, it is very helpful for our staff to be made aware of this. The Hall Directors are professionals who will respect students' privacy; however, having this information can be very helpful to Hall Directors as they try to meet the needs of all the students in their community.

We hope you will remind them there are people to talk to at UNH who care. Their Hall Director is the best place to start. You are welcome to call their Hall Director or the central Residential Life office to discuss any concerns you have.
