Stoke Hall is the largest building on campus and is one of the best! It’s a great place to live and residents love their experience here. The hall staff is awesome and the students who live here really enjoy the atmosphere. There are a lot of bad stories out there about Stoke and you’ve probably heard all kinds of horror stories about the building. Trust us; those are old news and part of the past. Stoke is a great place to be!

Stoke Hall is an awesome place to live where you will immediately be connected with over 650 students! There is always someone new to meet, an experience to be had, a conversation to challenge you, moments that will bring tears of laughter and hysteria, or times when you can just sit and be one with yourself.

We have the biggest and best Floor Wars on campus that are challenged by many and duplicated by none! You don't want to miss these!

A common theme from in-coming students we hear often is, "I was so upset when I got placed in Stoke. I have heard so many bad things about it, but they are not true. This is a great place to live and I love it! I can't wait to live here next year." If you find yourself being worried about living in Stoke, don't worry. You'll love it and be incredibly pleased you were placed here!!

Academics

Academics are the most important part of your college education and we will do all we can to help you succeed. Our Staff regularly plans and puts on programs around study and test taking tips, academic success, time management, being personally healthy and balancing all that you take on in your career as a student. Along with helping you improve your academic performance while you’re here, we also help you prepare for life after UNH. We had an internships program where students came to learn about how they could get experiences now that will help them get a job later. It was a great program and really helped those who came get a leg up on other students!

We are also major participants in the Residence Hall College Bowl and some of our teams are looking to go all the way to a victory!

Community

Involvement in the community is an important part of what it means to be a Stoke resident. Our Staff strives and works very hard from day one to make sure you will have a great time living in our building. We love this place and we know you will too!! There is always some kind of activity going on every night that will allow for an escape from you everyday routine, or will allow you to learn something new. Each Resident Assistant plans and organizes weekly social events for their floors. They’re a great time and you won’t want to miss any of them!

Every floor has two lounges and there are always people hanging out, studying, playing guitar or just chatting. We feel each person who lives here is an important member of our building community. We don't want anyone to get lost in the magnitude of Stoke, so rest assured we will be reaching out to you for fun, excitement and making sure you are having a positive college experience.

Diversity

We firmly believe that each student should be responsible for where they live and should respect those around them. Each person who enters Stoke Hall and any other residence hall on this campus will be held to a high standard in regards to treating others with respect based on many components, which include but are certainly not limited to: their living environment, race, who they are as a person, gender, sexuality, background, interests, religion and anything else you can think of!
Our goal is to help all of our students feel safe and comfortable living in a large building. This is our commitment to you, and all we ask is that you respect those around you and treat one another with care and respect.

Community Service Project
Stoke Hall's Community Service Project is working with the Oyster River Youth and Parent Association with Youth Night Out.

Youth Night Out is held at Oyster River Middle School and is comprised of students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Each event we have a large contingent of Stoke residents, 10 Parents and 250 kids who participate in assorted activities that are lead and sponsored by Stoke Hall residents. Stoke residents help plan the night and all of the activities associated with it.

Youth Night Outs are held once a month and include activities ranging from karaoke, lots of crafts, face painting, a dance hall with a live DJ, tug of war, basketball, and wild and crazy games of dodgeball! Each night is different depending on what activities the residents of Stoke plan. It is fun for all both in the planning stages and during the actual night! Come join the fun and help provide the youth of our community with an exciting and active night!

Stoked Out
Stoked Out is Stoke Hall’s favorite place to get study snacks! Our own little convenience store located in the fifth floor lounge, Stoked Out has discounted snacks like chips, candy bars, sweets and popcorn. Our students can also sign out ping-pong paddles for our brand new ping-pong table and other activities for those much needed study breaks! Stoked Out is open Sunday-Wednesday during prime study hours: 8-10 pm, and is run by the Stoke Hall Council!

5th Floor Lounge
Located in the center of the building is the giant 5th floor lounge where you will find a huge 37” Television, new DVD Player, Ping Pong Table, piano, lots of study space and a great environment for just hanging out. You will never be alone in this lounge as it is used often and laughter is always abundant! The hall staff does most of their large programs, the very popular Floor Wars, and educational and social programs in this lounge.

1st Floor Lounge
Located on the first floor is our beautiful recently renovated first floor lounge. This is a 24 hour a day quiet study lounge that is a great place to get the quiet time you need to get things done. It has lots of windows, tables for spreading out all those text books or doing group work, and study carrels. Check it out!

Wreath Lighting
Every December Stoke Hall has the annual Wreath Lighting. This is a huge, non-religious affiliated campus wide event that involves student and Staff performers, several A-cappella groups perform, as well as other high profile speakers from across campus.

The Wreath Lighting is filled with tradition, song, symbolism and bringing our campus community closer during the holiday season.

Hall Council
Hall Council is made up of residents in Stoke who like to get involved and plan cool events. During the fall semester our hall council sponsored some great hall programs including:

White Water Rafting on the Penobscot River
Autumn Apple Picking
Stoke Floor Wars
Karaoke Night
The Stoke Ice Cream Extravaganza

The Stoke Hall Council uses optional hall dues ($20/year) to run these great events, and to give dues payers discounts on other cool stuff like hall t-shirts, off-campus trips and more! Plus, just for paying hall dues, students are entered into a raffle to win cool prizes like iPods, free trips, and UNH apparel.

Current residents be on the lookout for these great upcoming events:
  • Boston Trip
  • Midnight trip to L.L. Bean
  • Spring White Water Rafting

Housed in Stoke Hall is one special theme floor:

Wired:

This theme is for students who share an interest in computers and technology. Throughout the year, students will increase their knowledge by learning from each other, inviting experts in for hands-on training, and putting skills to use in the hall. Working closely together, an atmosphere is provided in which everyone in the program can benefit, and have a lot of fun! You don't have to be a computer genius, just simply have an interest in the theme.

The WIRED floor is lots of fun and there are many opportunities for getting help with classes. We help each other regularly and use our different backgrounds and knowledge to assist one another.” ~ Nate

“It’s great to live in the same place as other people with my interests. We all play the same games and are in the same classes. It’s great to always have friends around.”
