The first year student assignment process starts when
you are accepted and decide to attend UNH and live on campus.
The housing application process for first-year students begins
in early December. Keep an eye on www.unh.edu/housing/firstyear
where you will be able to officially enroll at UNH and apply for
housing and dining. Be sure to check out the main Department
of Housing website too- it's a great resource for all things
housing related! For a look at all our halls please visit our Residence
Hall pages.
Here are five
steps that might be helpful to think about when you think about
your residence hall/roommate next year: |
|
|
|
Do
you want to live with someone you already know or live with someone
you don't know?
|
|
If you are
considering someone you know, be careful not to simply live with
them because you are friends.
|
|
|
Are
you sure you would be compatible as roommates? |
|
|
|
Do
you feel your friendship could withstand the challenges that
come with being roommates? |
|
|
|
Would
that friendship provide an anchor for you so you could go
out and meet new people and find new experiences? Or would
it make it less likely that you would reach out of your comfort
zone, meet others and get involved in campus activities.
|
| |
|
In our experience
sometimes living with a friend does not work out. |
|
|
Living
with someone you don't already know gives you a new experience that
can be very rewarding. If you are a person who can get along with
a wide variety of people, it is likely you will hit it off with
someone new.
|
|
|
In our experience,
we have found that there are no guarantees when it comes to making
this decision. Obviously knowing yourself well and putting some
thought into this decision can be helpful. |

Do
you want to live with people who have similar interests?
|
|
There
are about 1,500 students each year living in themed communities.
By requesting a theme you increase your chances
of being in a specific hall.

Are
you looking to live with people who come from diverse backgrounds?
|
|
College
is a great time to seek out being with people who come from different
background and learn from each other. This tends to be accelerated
in these communities.
If living in
a diverse community with people from a variety of backgrounds is
appealing to you, this may be a good place to start out at UNH.
If this is the case we suggest you check out the following themes:

|
Do
you want to live with all first year students or in a hall with
a mix of first year and upperclass students?
|
|
This
one is hard. There are advantages to both. Halls with all first
year students tend to be very social, it's easy to make friends.
Activities are geared to ease the first year student's transition
to UNH. People in these communities need to move after their first
year since these spaces are reserved for only first year students.
Living in a
mixed community with freshman and upperclass students gives you
a variety of people to learn from who have been at UNH for a while.
You will be exposed to many different students who will share what
they have gained from their experiences both in and out of the classroom.
If in the end,
you feel living in a first year hall is for you, check out these
options:

Do
you want to live
in a hall that tends to be more quiet and conducive to studying
than other halls?
|
|
In
our experience we have had more students unhappy because they feel
they are living in a hall that is too noisy and too distracting
then students saying a hall is too quiet. There can be a perfect
balance. If this is the case we recommend the following theme halls.
These halls
are all active and fun communities. Interestingly, students living
in these halls have higher GPAs.
