Advice for incoming first year students?

Plan ahead. Many of you may not know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life, and that’s ok. But if you think you may want to go to grad school, or law school, or med school, at any time in the future, you can’t mess around in the beginning. I learned something my first semester of college-a social life can be a lot of fun, but if you are barely getting a 2.0 you won’t have the opportunities you want later. Going into my Junior year of college I had to get straight A’s every semester if I wanted to break a 3.0 by graduation. Making up for the mistakes my freshman year was a lot more work than just doing well all along.   Learn from me. Go to class, get your work done, ask for help when you need it.

Why did you choose to become a Hall Director?

I wish I had a long story about the ups and downs of the decision process that included taking crappy jobs in retail, or telemarketing, but really, becoming a hall director was a natural progression for me.  During my first two years of college I wanted to be a teacher. When it became apparent to me that the plan wasn’t going to work out, I took an inventory of what I liked about college. The things that were at the top of the list included the organizations I was a part of, and living on campus. I talked to one of my organization advisors about his job and what it took to get him there. When I realized that I could get paid to do what I love, it just seemed like a no brainer. One of my career goals is to never work in a cubicle, or have my life resemble Office Space in any way, so far I think I’m on the right track.

Why did you choose UNH? What attracted you to the area or the school?

I choose UNH for a few reasons. First, I really liked the people. I met a few while in Boston for a conference and instantly felt at home. During my first visit to campus that feeling continued. The professionals and students were great. As I got on the plane heading back to Illinois, I knew I wanted to be part of the staff.  I also really liked the department structure. I’m excited to work with a large group of hall directors and focus on a smaller number of students.

As for the area, growing up in the Midwest, I’ve ALWAYS wanted to live on the east coast. (Though I think most of my ideas about east coast living come from an LL Bean Catalogue.) I’m ready to trade in the corn for some lobster.

Any previous experiences, hobbies, etc. that you would want Students to know about you?

I am a big fan of food and cooking. I like to experiment with different things and the food network is probably the top channel I watch. I’ve recently purchased a new bike! So I’m getting back into ridding which I’m stoked about. I enjoy TV. If it’s on, I probably watch it, though usually later in the week online. Some of my current favorites are How I Met your Mother, Entourage, Weeds,  Reaper, The Office, 30 Rock and The Big Bang Theory.   I tend to have an eclectic music sense and rely heavily on the recommendations of others for what I should be listening to. If you have suggestions, let me know!
