Residence Hall:
Advice for incoming students?
Get involved in all that interests you. Stick with the activities that you enjoy. You will never know what life has in store for you if you don’t jump right in and test the waters. Get a part time job it you can. Five hours a week may not sound like a lot, but it’s a great first step! It will put money in your pocket, and independence in your heart. Start thinking about opportunities for your first summer as a college student. It’s a great time to get a summer job that is in the direction of what you may eventually want to do. Internships are also available, so keep your eyes open. If you don’t do so already, start keeping a journal. It will be a real treat to read about your thoughts and new experiences down the road. Check out any opportunities for studying abroad. Whether its visiting a country which speaks a language you have learned, or you are fascinated by the culture, the experience will give you a culture shock of a lifetime! And don’t forget, ask lots of questions and use your resources, that’s why we’re here!

Why did you choose to become a Hall Director?
| I became a hall director because college was the best time in my life. I grew so much and had so many wonderful experiences. The faculty and staff at my college helped guide me through their challenge and support. I also really enjoyed being around my peers in college; much more than I did in high school. But did anyone actually like high school? I love living and working with students who are testing life, finding themselves, sometimes losing themselves, and then finding their new selves. I was an RA for three years and loved it! Becoming an RA was one of the best decisions of my life. It was a fun and enriching experience. My favorite part of being a hall director is learning about you, so stop by anytime! I can offer my knowledge and an ear, and hopefully empower you to be the person that YOU want to be.

Why
did you choose UNH? What attracted you to the area or to
the school?
Have you eaten in the dining hall?!?! YUM!!! But seriously, I was really impressed at the university’s commitment to being health conscious, student centered and inclusive. I also enjoyed the laid back attitude of the staff that I met as well as the friendliness of everyone. The large department of Residential Life and a cohort of 22 other hall directors was also VERY appealing. I love meeting new people! Also, my brother lives in Maine (2 hours away) with my sister-in-law and my niece. I LOVE being close to family and it’s a nice change from the last 7 years of being very far from everyone. Plus, I love watching my niece grow up. Have I mentioned how awesome she was?

Any previous experiences,
hobbies, etc. that you would want first year students to know about
you?
Well, I was born in the former Soviet Union, in Baku, Azerbaijan and grew up speaking Russian. I love any practice that I can get, so if you speak Russian, please stop by for a chat. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and find it difficult to get into so called “country activities”.
But I LOVE new experiences and am up for anything (I just can’t promise much skill).
Thoughts you might be having coming into your own “1st year” at UNH?
I am THRILLED to be here! This is my first full-time professional gig and I finally feel like a REAL adult. It’s all pretty exciting. I really want to take advantage of all that New England has to offer and feel very lucky to be living in the beautiful seacoast area. I look forward to meeting all my residents and getting to know each of you.
