Any Advice for Incoming 1st year students?:
-Keep your door open! This is how you’ll get to know your neighbors.
-Go to as many of the opening weekend activities as you can. This is really important to get to meet fellow students and figure out what activities and clubs you might want to join!
-Class is important. Be sure to go.
-Read your syllabus and write down all the important dates in your handy dandy planner.
-Try to plan studying abroad. I wish I had!
-Get to know your RA (and Hall Director!)
-Figure out a good system with your roommate. Open communication is vital here! Don’t be afraid to say how you’re feeling about something (in a respectful way, of course).
And then most importantly, my mom’s best advice: Avoid credit cards!
Why did you become a Hall Director?:
My reason for becoming a hall director goes back about five years ago when I became an RA at Rivier College. Applying for an RA position was one of the best decisions I ever made. I highly encourage you to apply if you think you
might like it. My main career goal in life is to help people. I find that Residence Life is a great way to work with amazing college students, while also having a lot of fun at the same time! I simply love the excitement and ever-changing atmosphere in a residence hall. Your day is never the same! I also highly value getting to know students individually, and I find that as a hall director (especially at UNH) this is the main focus! I cannot wait to get to know all of you!
Why did you choose UNH? What attracted you to the area or the school?:
For a long time, I heard about what a great Residence Life department UNH has. I was able to find out for myself when I came onto campus for an interview! The department’s philosophy ties in very well to my own. I also realized how much I enjoy working at a school of the size of UNH. It’s fairly comparable to the size of UMaine. The resources on a campus of this size are amazing, yet the campus is also small enough for people to be able to get involved easily. It’s the best of both worlds! As for the area, Portsmouth is one of my favorite cities! As a UNH student, you have picked a great place to get your education! We’re close to Boston and inches away from the great outdoors.
Any previous experiences, hobbies, etc, that you would want 1st year students to know about you?:
I am from a small town in northern Maine, so I am glad that I’m not too far away from my family. I truly enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. I grew up with acres upon acres of woods as my backyard. For the past nine summers, I have worked at Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop, Maine. My other hobbies
include swimming, backpacking (which is new!), photography, reading good books, and now running. I’m also bringing with me my partner Josh. We met as Resident Directors at UMaine, and as a kid, he grew up in the residence halls at UMass Amherst, since his parents were Res Life staff, too! More than anyone, he understands why I love Res Life so much, and I’m glad to have him as a part of our great community in Williamson!
