Diversity is important to us in Mills Hall. Here is a
sample of some of the programs and ways we celebrate diversity:
-
DIVERSITY
PROGRAMS AND THEME WEEKS. Throughout the year,
we have done many programs that focus on different aspects
of diversity. We have played “Star Power” which
let us experience privilege, held the “Bias Gallery” in
the main lounge to showcase what hurtful and hateful things
have actually occurred in our residence halls, and more
recently we had the theme week of “Power and Oppression”. Students
were challenged to think about power and oppression with
provocative questions and an opportunity to stop by a table
in the lobby to learn more.
-
STAFF OFFICE SAFE ZONE. The Mills Staff Office, the resource area for Millsians and the daily workplace of the Residence Hall Director, is a "Safe Zone for All." What this means: " Unlike more visible under-represented groups on college campuses, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, questioning students, Jews, atheists, vegetarians, people with disabilities, Irish people, etc. cannot be easily identified. Similarly, there is no easy method of identifying persons supportive of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered, Jews, atheists, vegetarians, people with disabilities, and Irish, etc. persons and issues. The Safe Zone provides a way for supportive faculty, staff, administrators, and students on college campuses and communities to prominently and non-verbally illustrate that they are a safe contact for all diverse students and employees." (www.safezoneforall.com) We are proud to designate the Mills Staff Office as a Safe Zone for All - a place where anyone can come at anytime and know that they are safe.
