Citizenship

Community is where it's AT in Mills!! Some students say that Mills is the "smallest tall hall on campus," meaning that even though it holds a large number of students, it feels more like a smaller hall due to the tight sense of community that exists within it.

A big component of our development as a community comes from all of the community service and service learning work that Millsians do together throughout the year. Here are some examples of community service work that Mills has done this year:

  • ON BELAY.On Belay is a program that helps kids whose parents, guardians, or other loved ones, are diagnosed with cancer come to understand the principles of support, control, and living through participating in outdoor adventure activities. This year, Mills Hall adopted On Belay as our primary service partner - whatever help they need, we do it! Not only do Millsians participate in the actual outdoor adventure days (these take place at the Browne Center , an outdoor education facility affiliated with UNH), but we do lots of behind-the-scene work too! Mailings, baking, fundraising - you name it and we're on it! Millsians are CRAZY for On Belay and we are so proud to associate ourselves with such a wonderful helping organization!!

  • HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA. A tradition that began in Mills' first full year of existence (2003), the Halloween Extravaganza is an event that reaches out into the greater Durham community. For one night, Mills Hall opens its doors to the public and invites local families to enjoy a night of family-friendly Halloween fun. A Haunted House, a Games Room, lots of food and drinks, and Trick-or-Treating throughout the hall are the highlights of the evening. This event is free to the public, and the 2005 event brought in 150 (estimated) Durham community members. This is an event that Mills residents worked for WEEKS to pull off, and it's become a highly successful event that the Durham community looks forward to each year!

  • CORNUCOPIA. The local food pantry conveniently located right on the UNH campus is called Cornucopia. Each year, Millsians donate money, canned goods, and paper products, all of which go towards the creation of food baskets that are given to Cornucopia during different holidays. Mills has given baskets in the past two years for the Thanksgiving and Winter holidays.

  • RELAY FOR LIFE.We’re in the early stages of putting together a Relay for Life team to help raise money for cancer research and survivor support programs.  Check out the American Cancer Society Homepage here: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp
This year’s event will take place on April 22nd.
