Many students like living in McLaughlin because of its great location on campus and strong sense of community. Our hall is home to 135 residents and five staff members whose goal is to make the year as enjoyable and safe as possible.

Students with diverse interests like sports & exercise, music & theater, outdoor recreation, and travel & study abroad, all find McLaughlin a welcoming community.

More than 60 Programs were held in McLaughlin this year.

Academics academics

It's not solely about fun and games in McLaughlin, our residents take their academics seriously. Most nights all three lounges are full of residents working hard on their class work.

This year, fifty-five McLaughlin residents earned a 3.2 or higher in the fall semester, that's almost half our hall!  We created a 24 hour Quiet Hour Study Lounge in the spring 2006 semester to celebrate these high achieving students and to allow all students more space to have a silent study space.

From our Fall Residence Hall Survey

  • 80% of McLaughlin residents like living in the hall

  • 80% of residents get along well with their roommates

  • 86% have had an overall positive experience at UNH

  • 90% of the residents respect their RA

Our Community Service Partnership

McLaughlin Hall has formed a partnership with Out of School Matters, an after school program for Barrington Middle School students. Our goal with this partnership is to get middle school students excited about college at an early age.
We have a pen-pal program with the middle schoolers. When they visited campus, McLaughlin residents gave them a tour encouraging them to attend college in the future.  In the past, during their time here, the Out of School Matters students were able to see how college students live in residence halls, they played a game of walleyball in the Whittemore Center and topped the afternoon off with ice cream sundaes in the McLaughlin lounge. It was a great time for everyone!

Diversity Education

The Laugh Staff is committed to engaging the residents in diversity activities, discussions, and acceptance.  We’ve had several diversity programs this year including, “Diversity Bingo,” “Bias Gallery,” and “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes.”  The students actively participated in these events and definitely took away knowledge, compassion, and self-awareness from their learning experience.

McLaughlin Hall Curriculum

The curriculum is a semester-long plan broken up into two week increments where the Laugh Staff concentrates and works together to focus on one overarching value that we want our residents to learn about, aiding in their growth and development.  This includes focusing our energy (bulletin boards, programs, individual contact conversations, staff development, etc.) for those two weeks on a certain topic. Our curriculum for spring 2008 includes: Diversity, MLK; Citizenship and Bystander Responsibility; Diversity, Social Classes; Health Myths and Facts around Alcohol; Internships, and Studying Abroad; Community Service; Closure & Stress Relief.

Student Involvement

McLaughlin students are involved on campus!  We have several sports teams represented including: track & field, football, volleyball, skiing, crew, gymnastics, soccer, and cross country.  McLaughlinites are also involved with the Outing Club, serve as student tour guides, participate in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and volunteer as Center for Academic Resources (CFAR) tutors, to name a few.  Many residents hold down part time jobs or work study positions on campus.
