Community @ UNH!
Our halls are filled with community in so many different forms.
From your big hall programs
To your small floor socials
Community at UNH and in all of the halls has one thing in common: PEOPLE!!!
People make up the great communities that exist on our floors, in our buildings, and make the residence halls a better place to live.
You are in a unique place here at UNH where everyone in the halls is around your age, interested in a lot of the same things you are, nad are all interested in getting to know the people around them. And the residence halls make it so easy to make that happen. On our surveys, more than 75% of our students felt most people on their floors were respectful to one another and more than 1 in 3 students says it’s easy to make friends in their halls. Sure, some halls are definitely bigger than others, but like we said above, community comes in all forms.
When we are looking for socials, our ideas focus on one person – YOU!! What are you interested in seeing happen or have fun with in the halls? Ping-pong? Sure, we’ve got it! Guitar Hero Tournements? Got those too! Trips to Boston, New York City, and all over New Hampshire? Look no further than the sign-ups on your bathroom door. And these can’t all done by Hall Staff – NO WAY!!! We need the help of volunteer students who are looking out for the hall. That’s where Hall Councils and Activity Boards come in!
Hall Councils/Activity Boards:
These are made up of students who voluntarily want to get involved in the hall. At the beginning of each school year each hall holds elections and looks for folks who are just like you and want to get involved. It’s a great way to learn leadership skills and gain great experience in running socials and managing budgets. Many of our hall council and activity board members go one to different levels of leadership including Resident Assistant, Student Senate members, and executive board members across the campus. Hall Councils and Activity Boards are FUN!!!
Leadership development is a big part of the learning that also goes into Hall Councils and Activity Boards. You’ve got some great responsibility on your hands if you sign up. But, we’re here to help you. Every Hall Council has an advisor – either the Hall Director or the Senior Resident Assistant (in Williamson, Christensen, the UQ, and Stoke). This person helps you direct the group, give suggestions on what to accomplish, and develops your leadership style. To further this experience, you can also get involved with the SOS Leadership Center. Check out more information about them here: http://www.unhmub.com/leadershipcenter/ and here: http://www.unhmub.com/leadership/.

Cat’s Cup:
Are you into sports? Then you’ll want to know about the Cat’s Cup. Each year from across the campus, different teams from nearly every res hall on campus compete against one another in the annual Cat’s Cup. Students from across campus have a great time and it really builds community. Be a team captain for your team and score a Pizza Party for the Hall, team t-shirts, and a trophy.
You can compete in sports like Broomball (like these guys), volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, flag football, pool games, and more!
Check out more information here: http://campusrec.unh.edu/intramurals/ from Campus Recreation.
Floor Wars:
Have you ever wanted to tape someone to a wall?
Just had the urge to put on as many t-shirts as possible within in minute?
Have fun with a group of people competing to win the pride and admiration of your hall?
Well, Floor Wars is what you’ve been looking found.
On UNH’s campus, you’re wild and wacky dreams have come true! Get your floor together and compete against the other floors in your building in an all out, drag out, fun competition in the hall. There’s a ton of zany and different competitions for everyone of all abilities and opportunities to get involved.
Each hall does things a little differently. In the Lower Quad (Hunter, Gibbs, and Engelhardt), they have Hall Wars in the Spring. In the Minis, they have MiniWars and MiniFest. In all the halls, Floor Wars happens, but in every hall it’s just a little bit different. Our Hall Councils, Activity Boards, Hall Directors, and RAs have some really great imaginations in getting you sloppy, smart and social-conscious. And it’s all about you! Have a great idea? Pass it along, we’ll use it!
