Hetzel Hall is home
to some of the larger rooms on campus and we have all types
to choose from: singles, doubles, triples, and two-room triples. It’s
also a very popular place to live for many reasons. A
small hall of about 160 residents, Hetzel is right on Main
Street, across from coffee
shops, stores, and restaurants in downtown Durham. The
location is excellent and the community in Hetzel is friendly
and fun.

Hetzel’s study lounge provides a comfortable and quiet
place to study and is well utilized by Hetzel Residents. Nearly
half of Hetzel students received honors, high honors, or highest
honors. The students who live here take school as seriously as
they take socializing.
Diversity
One thing that residents of Hetzel appreciate about
the community is that there are people with a lot of talents and
interests. Like all UNH residence halls, Hetzel strives to foster
an atmosphere of inclusion and understanding of difference. Throughout
the year we have programs that deal with difference and other
social justice topics. In the fall semester some leaders in the
Hetzel community went through a GLBT Safe Zone training. During
floor wars there is typically an activity that explores privilege
in society. There are also a lot of discussions that happen spontaneously
or as part of programs about various social justice issues. Hetzel
Staff has made great efforts to challenge residents to accept
and learn from diversity.
Community
Service
Hetzel
has a number of community service initiatives. In the fall of
2005, Hetzel fundraised over $200 for charitable causes including
Red Cross Hurricane Katrina/Rita Relief, Thanksgiving Dinner for
a local family in need, Kelvin our International Children Sponsor
Child, and a few other causes.
A few members of the Hetzel community have been involved with
a local organization called SeaCoast Reads. This organization
volunteers time to read with children in local communities twice
a week.
Hetzel is continuing efforts began last year to sponsor Kelvin
a child in the Dominican Republic, through International Children.
Hetzel raises funds to provide this student with food, shelter,
clothing, and education. Here’s a link to the organizations
website: www.children.org
We also have a small group that meets weekly to knit afghans
for people in Afghanistan affected by war and poverty.
