UNH's CCOM Helps Develop App to Protect Whales from Collisions with Ships
Researchers at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM) helped develop a new iPad and iPhone application that aims to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales from collisions with ships. Kurt Schwehr, affiliate assistant professor, research associate professor Lee Alexander, and research scientist Roland Arsenault, provided technical expertise for the development of key... Oceans' Depths Remeasured by CCOM Scientists
Scientists from UNH's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM), led by Jim Gardner, have mapped the deepest part of the world's oceans in greater detail than ever before. Measurement of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific was completed to help determine the exact extent of US waters in the region. Multibeam Sonar Can Map Undersea Gas Seeps to Gain Understanding of Ocean Environments
A technology commonly used to map the bottom of the deep ocean can also detect gas seeps in the water column -- a conceptual “column” of water from surface to the seafloor -- with remarkably high fidelity. UNH Receives $35M from NOAA for Ongoing Ocean Mapping Work
The University of New Hampshire’s Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM) has received $35.7 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to continue the Joint Hydrographic Center, a NOAA partnership and a national ocean-mapping research center. The funding, granted through a competitive process, provides the center with $7,151,000 per year for five years, through...
