Intellectual Property 101
Speaker: Maria Emanuel, ORPC Senior Licensing Manager
Date: Thursday, September 22, 2011
Location: UNH Memorial Union Building (MUB) Theater I
Time: 4:00 – 5:00 pm
At the core of university-based innovation is intellectual property. Whether it's patents, copyrights, or trademarks, come learn how intellectual property is protected in general and managed at UNH. This seminar will cover the basics of IP and how understanding intellectual property can actually accelerate the advancement of knowledge in your area, including a brief discussion on non-traditional areas (teaching, creative expression, etc). We will discuss relevant policies on campus which impact IP and will leave time for discussion.
Dilutive Capital for Small Businesses – Venture Funding and the NH-ICC
Speakers: Mark Galvin (Managing Director, NH-ICC), Jesse Devitte (Co-Founder, Borealis Ventures), and Pete Tchoryk (CEO, Michigan Aerospace Corp.)
Date: Thursday, October 27, 2011
Location: UNH Memorial Union Building (MUB) Theater I
Time: 4:00 – 5:30 pm
Starting a company is an emerging goal for many people. An idea is great but most great ideas need funding to get off the ground. Our October seminar will discuss company formation and a few models on how to start a new business. Speakers from the NHICC, Borealis Ventures, and Michigan Aerospace will discuss how they try to get new ideas off the ground.
Non-Dilutive Capital for Small Businesses – SBIR/STTR Funding and the NHIRC
Speakers: Marc Sedam, Executive Director, ORPC and Pete McDonald, VP, Silicon Valley Bank
Date: Thursday, November 17, 2011
Location: UNH Memorial Union Building (MUB) Theater I
Time: 4:00–5:00PM
If funding via angel investment and venture capital is like slicing up your company's turkey, non-dilutive capital sources are like wonderful guests who show up bringing their own side dishes! Not enough as an entrée but an important part of the complete meal.
This seminar will focus on one of the most attractive topics in company formation—sources of non-dilutive funding. These funding sources bring much-needed cash into an organization but do not require the sale of equity, meaning you own the same amount of your company both before and after receiving funds. Certain types of non-dilutive funding (like SBIR/STTR) can be used effectively as start-up capital before your business truly ramps up.
Topics to be discussed include venture lending, financing your receivables, and different types of grants available for technology based businesses.
Speakers include leading bankers from Rt.128 and professionals who understand the government grant process.
Undergraduate Research Conference/Holloway Business Plan Competition
Speakers: Marc Sedam (Executive Director, ORPC), John Aber (UNH Provost and VP for Academic Affairs) and Michael Merenda (Chair and Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, WSBE)
Date: Thursday, January 26, 2012
Location: UNH Memorial Union Building (MUB) Theater I
Time: 4:00–5:00PM
The Innovation Catalyst Seminar returns after a holiday break with this month's seminar which will focus on UNH's student population and our two most popular programs—the Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) and the Holloway Prize Innovation-to-Market Competition. In its 13th year, the URC is one of the largest undergraduate research conferences in the country, with over 1,000 students across all disciplines participating. The Holloway Prize (even older in its 24th year) provides tens of thousands of dollars in cash and services to the winners. Please come to learn more about these opportunities, what happens at the end of each event, and how each program might give you the first glance at the "next big thing" to come out of UNH.
