Love Your Data Week Day 4 Theme Finding the Right Data

#LYD17 Message of the Day: Need to find the right data? Have a clear question, locate quality data sources, and cite the dataset you use appropriately.

Did you know that UNH is a member of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)?  ICPSR is an international consortium of 760 member institutions and is part of the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. ICPSR was established in 1962 as a survey data archive, but has grown into much more.

As a member institution, our students, faculty, and staff have access to:

  • All of ICPSR’s services, including resources for instruction
  • Discounted tuition to their Summer Program
  • Social and behavioral sciences data from the archive

Teaching & Learning with Data

ICPSR offers instructional and educational resources to help introduce undergraduate students to data analysis. These prepared classroom exercises make it easier for faculty to incorporate data-driven learning experiences into their curriculum.

Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research

ICPSR offers a summer educational program for hands-on training in statistical techniques, research methodologies, and data analysis for pre-tenure faculty and graduate students. The summer’s schedule includes be two four-week sessions (June 26 to July 21, 2017 and July 24 to August 18, 2017) and 50 two- to five-day workshops.

Scholarships are available from ICPSR for the four-week sessions for advanced graduate students and pre-tenure faculty. Application deadline for scholarships are March 31, 2017.  Registration is now open!

Find Data for Re-Use or Submit Data for Sharing

The data archive holds more than 250,000 files of research in the social and behavioral sciences from more than 8,000 studies and 21 specialized collections. While most of the files do not have any access restrictions, there are some restricted-use data available to vetted researchers.

You can use research data from ICPSR to conduct research re-using collected data to generate new findings or support findings from current research.

You can also deposit your research data with ICPSR.  ICPSR offers data curation services, long-term preservation, and dissemination of your research data.

Visit ICPSR to learn more about their services and explore their many resources, including guidance on data citation.  Contact Louise Buckley, your campus ICPSR Official Representatives, if you have any questions.

Visit the Love Your Data website for more on finding good data including things to consider, stories, resources, and activities.

The University of Hampshire (UNH) also has a wealth resources to help researchers conduct research responsibly and that include resources on responsible data management practices.  These include:
