New School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering Will Integrate Graduate Education, Research and Engagement

Sep 13, 2013

UNH has launched the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, the University's first interdisciplinary school. Designed to address today’s highly complex ocean and coastal challenges through integrated graduate education, research and engagement, it will serve as an interdisciplinary nexus for marine science and ocean engineering teaching and research across the University.

Larry Mayer, the School's director, says that "the school acknowledges the contributions that faculty here have made to the marine world and provides a better platform to attract students, federal funding and donors and, ultimately, to better serve the region and the world in managing and conserving marine resources.”

The School includes a number of cooperative institutes and academic and research centers of excellence that support the marine science education, research and outreach missions of the University:

  • New Hampshire Sea Grant
  • Atlantic Marine Aquaculture Center
  • Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center
  • Coastal Response Research Center
  • National Estuarine Research Reserve Science Collaborative
  • Northeast Consortium
  • Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory
  • Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership
