The National Science Foundation (NSF) has published FY 2011 Performance and Financial Highlights which summarizes the agency's budget, grant making activity, and progress towards its strategic performance goals in 2011.

The report indicates that fewer proposals were submitted and fewer awards were made in FY 2011 compared with FY 2010. As a result, NSF’s funding rate was about the same for 2010 and 2011, and only slightly below the rate for previous years (excepting 2009 when ARRA (stimulus) funds pushed the funding rate up significantly).

The report also provides information about:

• Distibution of NSF's budget to its various offices and activities
• Types of NSF’s awards (e.g., grants, cooperative agreements, contracts) and recipients
• Proportion of NSF funds spent on research and related, equipment and facilities, education, etc.
• NSF’s progress toward meeting 2011 performance goals designed to help the Foundation achieve the three strategic goals identified in its 2011-2016 strategic plan
