UNH Art Historian Curates Exhibit of Vintage Japanese Photos

Nov 28, 2011

Vintage photographs of 1860s and ’70s Japan are featured in an exhibit at the UNH Museum of Art curated by UNH Professor of Art History Eleanor M. Hight.

Felice Beato: Photographer in Nineteenth-Century Japan presents stunning original photographs of Japan during an unsettled period when that nation was shifting from an isolated society under shogunates to an open one.  The exhibition includes nearly 100 albumen photographs by the Italian-born Felice Beato (1832–1909), one of the most successful early photographers in Japan.

An accompanying catalogue written by Dr. Hight reproduces dozens of photographs from the exhibit and provides context for, and analysis of, Beato’s work.

The exhibition, free and open to the public, continues through December 12.  Visit the Museum of Art online for hours and additional information.
