Reminder: Data Management Plans are Required for NSF Proposals Submitted/Due After January 18th

Feb 04, 2011

The requirements of the new National Science Foundation Proposal and Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 11-1) are now in effect.  Among other noteworthy changes to the PAPPG is a requirement that all proposals submitted to NSF contain a Data Management Plan, uploaded as a Supplementary Document.  NSF’s automated proposal system, FastLane, has begun compliance checking for the data management plan and proposals that do not observe the requirement are being blocked from submission.

If a program solicitation provides specific requirements for the preparation of data management plans, such requirements must be followed.  Absent such requirements, the elements for a data management plan can vary by NSF Directorate, Office, Division, or Program.  NSF has developed guidance to assist in the development of such plans.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact the NSF Policy Office on (703) 292-8243 or by e-mail to policy@nsf.gov, or your SPA Grant & Contract Administrator.
