NSF to Require Data Mangement Plan in Proposals

NSF to Require Data Mangement Plan in Proposals

Sep 22, 2010

The National Science Foundation is planning to require that all proposals include a data management plan in the form of a two-page supplementary document. This requirement, announced at the May 5 National Science Board meeting, is explained in a May 10th NSF Press Release.

The new requirement should change existing NSF policy stating that, “Investigators are expected to share with other researchers, at no more than incremental cost and within a reasonable time, the primary data, samples, physical collections and other supporting materials created or gathered in the course of work under NSF grants.”

Data management plans will be subject to peer review, but NSF directorates and divisions are expected to tailor implementation in a manner appropriate to the culture of their disciplines.
