Live Fire Extinguisher Training

The Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) is offering live fire extinguisher training on Friday, October 4th in the Kingsbury Hall courtyard. The first session will begin at 8:00 am and will run every 30 minutes, with the last session beginning at 4:30. Each session will involve a brief discussion of fire extinguisher use and then each participant will have the opportunity to use a portable fire extinguisher.

New Members Join UNH Occupational Safety Committee

Senior Vice Provost for Research Jan Nisbet recently appointed two new members to UNH's Occupational Safety Committee (OSC). They are: Alan Bryce and Robert Constantine, representing the University Libraries.

Radiation Safety Committee Will Meet On September 25, 2013

The next Radiation Safety Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, 2013, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in Rudman Hall G04.  The Committee webpage can be viewed at http://www.unh.edu/research/radiation-safety-committee-rsc.

New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services Inspection

New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) conducts unannounced inspection of UNH Radiological Protection Program (RPP).  Three inspectors from the Radiological Health Section of HHS performed the inspection on July 24th.  The inspection team completed a records review of the RPP and visited research labs where radioactive materials are used and stored. The inspectors found no violations in the OEHS central records management system or in our facilities.

OEHS Annual Report Posted

The 2012 Annual Report for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) is available for viewing on the OEHS webpage.  The Annual Report describes the state of the University’s environmental health and safety efforts, including the findings of any environmental audit conducted during the reporting period.  The report can be accessed at http://www.unh.edu/research/environmental-health-and-safety.

Chemical Safety Committee Will Meet On September 4, 2013

Conference on National Security and Campus Safety Issues That Affect Higher Education Institutions

The University of New Hampshire will host a conference in conjunction with the FBI’s New Hampshire and Massachusetts Field Office’s.  The conference will be held on Tuesday, August 6th, 2013 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the University of New Hampshire’s Memorial Union Building, 83 Main Street, Durham, NH 03824.  Please Park in Lot A.

Institutional Biosafety Committee Will Meet on Sept 12, 2013

The next Institutional Biosafety Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013, from 2pm to 4pm in Rudman G04.

Registration submissions are due by August 22nd for review at the meeting.

New Parsons Hall Emergency Operations Plan Available

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety has partnered with the UNH Chemistry Department and other campus stakeholders to develop and implement an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) for the recently renovated Parsons Hall. Copies of the plan are available at the OEHS Emergency Procedures page.

UCLA Creates Center for Research Laboratory Safety

The UC Center for Laboratory Safety has been created to improve the practice of research laboratory safety through the performance of scientific research and implementation of best safety practices in the laboratory. Recently scheduled workshops emphasize issues related to chemical hazards, and will provide a forum for lab safety professionals and researchers to discuss challenges with research lab safety and brainstorm solutions for creating safe working environments.
