The Buckley Amendment was designed to establish the rights of students, to inspect and review their education records, prevent the release of educational records to third parties without permission of the student, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through formal and informal hearings. Students also have the right to file complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act office (FERPA) concerning alleged failures by the institution to comply with the Act. The University System Policy to the Buckley Amendment may be found in the Students Rights and Rules published each fall by the University.
One part of the Act allows "directory" information to be made available to third parties without requiring permission of the student. At UNH, directory information consists of:
Students name, address, telephone number, and email address
Major field of study
Participation in officially recognized sports or activities
Weight and height of members of athletic teams
Dates of Attendance
Degrees and awards received
Most recent previous educational institution or agency attended by the student
Class
Honors
Date of Birth
If you do not want the above information disclosed as public or "directory" information or do not want your records released to honor societies, you must complete a Non-Disclosure Form.
NOTE: grades are also considered "directory" information to the extent that honor rolls may be published. Transcripts of students' academic records or students' g.p.a.'s may be released to the faculty advisers of officially recognized honor societies on campus upon request unless the student has filed an objection to this specific procedure with the Registration Office. Only faculty members and appropriate administrators have the right to access student records. Semester grade reports can be released to parents whose son/daughter has filed a "Grade Report Authorization" form with the Registration Office, or if the parents file a "Grade Report Request" form and attach a copy of their Federal Income Tax return indicating that the student is a legal dependent. Parents cannot authorize release of information on their student to a third party.
