How is learning affected? image of brain

Psychology majors Kimberly Voorhies and Bligh Reynolds are both interested in studying the learning process. Under the mentorship of Prof. Robert Mair, Kimberly received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship to study the effect of lesions in nuclei of the central thalamus on the sequence of learning in rats. Bligh won an Undergraduate Research Award that enabled her to work with Prof. Robert Drugan, pursuing her research topic entitled "Involvement of Hypothermia in Swim Stress-Induced Deficits in Navigational Learning."

Admission to the Major as a New First-year or Transfer Student

Students entering the University as first-year or transfer students may declare Psychology as part of the UNH admission process. First year students will be admitted as "provisional" Psychology majors. Provisional majors are advised by the University Advising and Career Center until they complete both PSYC 401 and PSYC 402 with a C- or better.  Transfer students who are admitted directly to the Psychology major are advised in the psychology department.

Admission to the Major as a Continuing Student

If you are a continuing student interested in declaring Psychology or a Provisional Psychology major ready to become an official Psychology major, you may do so during one week each term, usually the fourth week of the semester. Provisional majors must have completed both PSYC 401 and PSYC 402 with a C- or better before declaring. All other students must have completed both PSYC 401 and PSYC 402 with a C or better before declaring. To declare, follow the change of program process outlined below.

The Change of Program Process

Obtain a yellow change of program form from the Registrar's Office or download one here. If you are an undeclared or provisional major, you should meet with your undergraduate advisor at Hood House to start the process. If you are a declared major, you should meet with your major advisor to start the process. Your advisor will sign you out of your current major and provide you with your student academic file. Continue to obtain appropriate signatures on the form following the order listed on the bottom of the form. Your final step will be to submit your completed form to the Liberal Arts Dean's Office in 110 Murkland Hall.
