UNH PrOVES

2009 Service Projects

Homemaker’s is a charitable healthcare agency that provides a medical and social day care program for older and disabled community members. Homemakers will host their annual Senior Olympics with the help of PrOVES. Students will assist staff in running the events, recording times, making awards, and spending time with the “athletes” during the activities. PrOVES will also help out with their regular program activities, such as crafts, music, and bingo.

The Community Center in a nonprofit organization that offers numerous educational programs for over 150 local school children. In the past PrOVES has helped build a library and categorize the books for the children to use, as well as cleaning out the gym, and preparing classrooms for the start of the school year. This year, they’re looking to add an additional map mural to their walls, as well as assistance with painting and redesigning their facilities.

The Great Bay Discovery Center serves as an educational conservation headquarters for the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. PrOVES has been working with the kind folks at the Discovery Center for over seven years! In the past participants have worked to repair a wigwam on their Native American site, in addition to cleaning up the Great Bay shore front, and helping with trail and boardwalk maintenance.

This is the first time that PrOVES has worked with Prescott Park, and we are very excited to be adding them to our list of service sites! The PPAF has been providing art, music, theater and dance to the Seacoast area for 35 years! This summer they are hosting a production of Grease, and need our help in breaking down their sets. They also have an entire attic filled with props, costumes, and equipment that we will help organize.

Riverside is 24-hour care, county nursing home facility with over 200 residents. PrOVES has been working with Riverside for many years, providing meaningful interactions with its residents. Students have also helped clean up the home’s courtyard, in addition to assisting in social/cultural residential outings.

This was a new site for PrOVES last year, and we are very excited to be working with the folks at the Science Center again! Located in Odiorne State Park, the Center is home to miles of walking trails, most of which are handicapped accessible. Last year we helped provide much needed trail maintenance, as well as clearing brush and creating a new picnic area for the facility.

Strawbery Banke is a landmark museum in Portsmouth that tells the history of the seacoast area. For our second year in a row, Strawbery Banke will be hosting the entire PrOVES program for a morning of fun and united service work! Last year PrOVERs helped relocate a large area of vegetation near their welcome center, in addition to assisting the grounds crew with some painting touch ups. This year, they need a lot of help going through the various basements at the museum and organizing their collections and belongings.
