News from the Grate (Book Title)
News from the Grate is a collection of poems and essays by University of New Hampshire English Professor Deborah Brown. The essays are on writers such as Edith Wharton and Willa Cather which the author can speak extensively about, while the poems delineate the constellation of family, using her own as model. In these wry, yet somehow hungry, poems, she brings us family life filled with her grandmother’s laughter, her mother’s anger, her sister’s difficult death. She juxtaposes wonderful contrasts, such as her husband’s tuna sandwich with her own poems (The Perfect Sandwich). Brown's poems and essays have appeared in Prairie Schooner, Alaska Quarterly Review, American Literature, The Women’s Review of Books, The Connecticut Review, Poetry Miscellany, Modern Language Studies, and other journals. She is available to do readings and discuss her work. (Oyster River Press, 2001, ISBN#1-882291-77-8)
